Announcements — October 15, 2017

Thank you to all who supported the Neighbors in Need offering of the UCC last week.

Please join us for our Costco Luncheon following the worship service, which is a fundraiser in support of our church’s General Fund.  Thank you to all who have helped make this possible, and to all who are supporting this congregation in so many ways.

The Christian Ed and Christian Nurture Committees will meet briefly  today at 12:30 pm in the Library.  Please get your Costco Lunch, and join us!

Smyrna’s Book Club is reading Oh My Stars by Lorna Landvick. See this month’s Behold for ordering information, and a short summary of the book.  If you have questions, call Rebekah Yoder at 503-504-0693, or email at Rebmy75@gmail.com.

Save the Date:  Voices of Faith/Health Care for All —The Health Committee and the Church Council of Smyrna UCC would like to invite you to join us on Tuesday, November 7th at 5:30 pm for dinner and movie, and a conversation around Health Care for All.  We will have a salad potluck, starting at 5:30 pm, then at 6 pm, we will show the 45-minute movie, “Fix It:  Healthcare at the Tipping Point.” At 6:45, we will be joined by special guests Dr. Michael Huntington, a retired oncologist from Corvallis United Church of Christ, Dr. Samuel Metz, a retired anesthesiologist from Portland, and Lee Mercer, former director of Healthcare for All Oregon, who is from Silverton.  They will lead us in a discussion from 6:45 to 7:30 pm of issues surrounding access to affordable, quality healthcare for all.  Please share this information with your friends and neighbors, and encourage them all to join us!

Our Whole Lives:  Sexuality Education for Teens. Starting Oct. 20 from 4:30-8:30 pm, Smyrna will offer the UU/UCC curriculum for sexuality education. Kristin Wishon and Heather Anderson, who attended a teacher training for this program in Portland in August, are co-facilitators of this program. 

Tai Chi meets Wednesdays at 9 am.

Coffee and Friends:  Coffee and Friends meets each 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 2-3:30 pm in Pastor Deb’s office. 

Mission Needs—

Stitch Club Challenge: Oatmeal is needed at the Molalla Service Center (so that kids have something to eat before school), and soup (so they have something to eat when they come home)!   Thank you for your generous gifts. 

Filling the Ark:  Thank you to all who have helped with this life-transforming project.  Check out the table to see the wonderful animals available for purchase, and continue to save your change.  Thank you! 

Cookware  and Pillows Needed:  Please bring new or gently used cookware, as well as new or very gently used pillows, to share with those who are moving from homeless shelters into new apartments Kristin Wishon will deliver.

Events and notices

Friday evening’s event hosted by the Confirmation Class, with Gary and Nancy Spanovich from the Wholistic Peace Institute has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.  

Please note the following events which are coming soon: 

Beavercreek UCC Bazaar is this Saturday, October 14th from 9-4, with lunch from 11-2

Costco Dinner this Sunday, October 15th following church to support the General Fund.  Christian Ed and Christian Nurture will meet at 12:30 in the library to coordinate planning for classes and activities.  

Trunk or Treat is Saturday, October 28th from 5-7 in the Smyrna parking lot.

Tuesday, November 7th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.  Voices of Faith - Health Care for All - potluck dinner, movie and Q&A with guest speakers, Dr. Michael Huntington, Dr. Samuel Metz, and Lee Mercer - Smyrna Fellowship House.
